As the days grow brighter and the chill of winter begins to fade, we find ourselves at a powerful turning point in the year: Imbolc. Falling between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, Imbolc is a time of renewal, healing, and setting intentions for the growth to come. It invites us to shed what no longer serves us, heal old wounds, and step into the light with clarity and purpose.
For those of us on a healing journey, Imbolc offers the perfect opportunity to reflect on our progress, release stagnant energy, and plant seeds of transformation. It's a time to reconnect with our inner light, even if it's been hidden in shadow.
The Renewal Energy of Imbolc
Imbolc marks the first stirrings of spring. In nature, this is when seeds buried deep within the earth begin to awaken. Similarly, within ourselves, we can feel the urge to grow, create, and heal. The energy of renewal reminds us that no matter how dark the winter, the light always returns.
This is a moment to pause and ask:
What have I been holding onto that no longer serves me?
What seeds of growth and healing do I want to plant in my life?
Healing Through Shadow Work
Imbolc is not just about embracing the light----it's also about honoring the darkness we've walked through to get here. Shadow work, or the process of exploring and integrating the hidden aspects of ourselves, is especially potent during this time.
Shadow work allows us to:
Uncover limiting beliefs and patterns.
Acknowledge buried emotions that need healing.
Release the shame and pain tied to our past.
By doing this work, we create space for growth and transformation, just as the eart clears away the remnants of winter to prepare for spring.
The Wisdom of Persephone
In my own healing journey, I've often turned to the myth of Persephone, the goddess who spends part of the year in the underworld and part in the light. Her story resonates deeply with the process of healing: the willingness to descend into the depths of our own inner world to face the shadows, and the strength to rise again with newfound wisdom and clarity.
Like Persephone, we can honor both our moments of darkness and our return to the light. Imbolc teaches us that both are essential for growth and renewal.
A Personal Reflection
As I reflect on my healing journey, the story of Persephone resonates deeply with me. Her descent into the underworld mirrors my own experiences--living with incurable cancer while also unpacking the layers of emotional neglect, trauma, and breaking generational cycles. Like Persephone, I've found that the underworld isn't just a space of darkness; it's a realm of profound transformation.
Living with cancer has reshaped my perspective on healing. It's not a linear path, nor is it one with a clear resolution. Instead, it unfolds in cycles--moments of descent into uncertainty, discovery, and eventually renewal. My spiritual and emotional healing follows the same rhythm. Both have taught me that life stirs even in the depths, and that growth often begins where we least expect it.
Imbolc, with its energy of quiet renewal and hope, reminds me of this truth. Though I live with a diagnosis that has no cure, I've come to see this journey as an invitation to deepen my connection to myself and to life. Cancer, like healing from trauma, has become a spiritual endeavor----one that requires me to face what no longer serves me, to release inherited pain, and to trust in the unseen.
This path has asked me to let go of control, to surrender to cycles that feel ancient and yet deeply personal. Some days, the weight of it feels overwhelming; other days, it feels like the first warmth of spring after a long winter. In living with incurable cancer, I've learned that healing isn't about erasing the pain or pretending it doesn't exist. It's about honoring the journey as it is, embracing its challenges, and allowing myself to be transformed by them.
This dual journey----of cancer and emotional healing----has taught me to see beauty in the process, even when it feels heavy. Renewal isn't a singular event's; it's an ongoing practice, one of shedding, rebuilding, and embracing the unknown. Both journeys have shown me that healing is cyclical, like the seasons themselves, and that even in the darkest places, there is always light waiting to emerge.
